Rare 1998 Neutral Milk Hotel Videos Surface

Thanks to the good people at Merge Records, a few good quality Neutral Milk Hotel videos have surfaced from a 1998 concert at the Knitting Factory in NY. Originally two videos were posted (Two Headed Boy and April 8th); however, since then three more have been uploaded (Oh Comely, The Fool, and The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. 2 &3).

It seems that there must be footage of the whole concert so stay tuned in case more videos are posted in the future. For now, check out the four videos below for an intense and glorious stroll through memory lane by way of Jeff Mangum’s heralded creation Neutral Milk Hotel. And if you aren’t a Mangum/NMH fan, at least check out a few seconds towards the middle of “Oh Comely” to see the magnificent singing saw (one of the most unique instruments out there) in action.

The BLAKROC Webisodes Keep Rolling

It’s been a while since we last spoke about the amazing collaboration between The Black Keys and 11 marquee hip-hop artists to create the group and album entity known as BLAKROC. As a matter of fact, it’s been about six weeks and if you remember, webisodes of the behind the scenes making of the album have and continue to be posted at the official website blakroc.com every week.

In the previous post,  we saw Mos Def doing his thing in Webisode 2. Since then there have been some major high points in the webisode series (which are all worth watching by the way) including week 4 with the Rza coming into the studio, smoking some herb to “get into his spiritual zone”, dropping some lyrics, and surprising many by throwing down some licks on the guitar that would end up forming the outline of the song.

Another highlight was the week 6 webisode which features The Black Keys producing some instrumental tracks (or beats if you will) that are later followed by some impressive flows by Noe. To be honest, I don’t know very much of Noe; however, after hearing him rap, I wonder why I’ve not heard more of him before.

Lastly, the most recent week 8 webisode showed none other than Billy Danze from M.O.P. drinking some Henessy straight (because “how you gonna get it done if you don’t do it straight?”) , listening to a few tracks, and then settling down on one and dropping a solid verse.

Stay tuned in future weeks for the remaining webisodes and don’t forget that the self-titled debut BLAKROC album will be released on November 27th.

Joy Orbison Remixes Four Tet and Releases Mixes Galore

joyorbison

More Four Tet related news, but this time Four Tet is more the byproduct and up and coming dubstep producer Joy Orbison is the main feature. London’s Peter O’Grady aka Joy Orbison has recently prepared an excellent remix of Four Tet’s new single “Love Cry” (which can be heard below) and continues to build the anticipation for his upcoming debut album on Hotflush Recordings (no major details on that yet). In other news, Four Tet and Joy Orbison will be playing a show together at The Dome in London on Feb. 12, 2010.

There has not been a whole lot of output from Joy Orbison to date; however, what he has released has already won over many critics and fans alike. Joy initially splashed into the spotlight with his exquisite dubstep track “Hyph Mngo” (see below) which was released along with another quality song “Wet Look”. He also has a few other tunes on his myspace but other than that, all we have to listen to are a few long mixes he’s done.

Fortunately, you can listen to/download the mixes freely below and if you look closely (tracklists for each below) you can see that he snuck a few more of his own songs onto the fine Doldums Mix including “Hyph Mngo”.

Joy Orbison is a name you are not going to want to forget (and aren’t likely too), so keep on the lookout for him in the future.

Upcoming: New DOOM EP and Madvillain LP

Our favorite multi-aliased, comic-based, masked, villainous MC known as DOOM (…remember all caps when you spell the man name) has prepared a new EP (see album art above) centered around the Gazillion Ear track off DOOM’s recent record Born Like This. The Gazillion Ear EP features remixes (headlined by Thom Yorke of Radiohead and David Sitek of TV on the Radio), instrumental tracks, an a capella, and a few non Gazillion Ear b-sides, all to be released on December 8 via Lex Records. Check out the tracklist and a stream of the Thom Yorke Gazilion Ear remix below.

In other news, DOOM has been busy at work with fellow blunted super producer Madlib on the sequel to their 2004 masterpiece Madvillain – Madvillainy. Although there is still no official title or release date to the new Madvillain LP, you can be sure that it will be released on Stones Throw Records (hopefully in early 2010). J Rocc (of the Stones Throw crew) recently played a few snippets of songs from the upcoming Madvillain album on the Fat Beats radio show (on Eastvillageradio.com) and as expected, they sound quite promising. Check out the a stream of JRocc’s Madvillain previews on the radio show below (via youtube). If you’re still wanting more, there was also a good article recently by the New Yorker on DOOM (with some details on the new Madvillain album), which can be partially read via Stones Throw.

Upcoming: Four Tet LP “There is Love In You”

As luck will have it, a few days after making my recent post on Four Tet’s new single “Love Cry”, details on Four Tet’s upcoming album have surfaced. The new album is called There Is Love In You and it consists of nine tracks including the aforementioned single Love Cry. The rest of There Is Love In You‘s tracklist can be seen below.

Four Tet aka Kieran Hebden hasn’t put out a full length album under his Four Tet moniker since 2005’s Everything Ecstatic; however, he has been keeping more than busy in the meantime putting out four experimental albums with Steve Reid, a new Fridge album, a collection of Four Tet remixes, an EP with Burial, a Four Tet EP, and a mix cd for the DJ Kicks series. Who knows what electronic tricks and gadgets he’s picked up in the meantime. All I can hope is that he later follows up the new album with a Part 2, much like Everything Ecstatic Pt. 2 because aside from some interesting b-sides and remixes there were some really trippy videos for all the songs on that album.

There Is Love in You:

01. Angel Echoes
02. Love Cry
03. Circling
04. Pablo’s Heart
05. Sing
06. This Unfolds
07. Reversing
08. Plastic People
09. She Just Likes to Fight
