Thom Yorke DJs, releases 12″ with Burial/Four Tet, and collaborates with DOOM

In case you haven’t been following music news in the last few weeks, Thom Yorke (of Radiohead fame) has been getting a lot of attention of late; but surprisingly, none of it is Radiohead related at all. In short, Yorke recently recorded a few songs with Burial and Four Tet, played a surprise DJ set at Low End Theory in Los Angeles, and is now rumored to be working with DOOM on some future songs that may eventually become a joint album.

After Four Tet and Burial last hooked up for their excellent Moth/Wolf Cub split in 2009, I was desperately hoping that the two would soon join forces again for some sort of release. Well, not only did they deliver on that front, they also enlisted a little known English singer named Thom Yorke to provide vocals for their two new tracks named “Ego” and “Mirror”. The songs were just released on Four Tet’s Text Records and you can take a listen to radio rips of each song below. Alternatively, you can download the songs in all their lossless glory here (which I was very surprised to find, so act fast on this):

As mentioned above, Thom also dropped some beats at a surprise DJ set for the bass friendly Low End Theory show in Los Angeles, CA (which is frequented by the Brainfeeder crew including Flying Lotus, seen below). Check out a good quality video of DJ Thom in action below.

Furthermore, Pitchfork recently reported on a potential collaboration between the metal-faced DOOM and Thom Yorke, citing a recent Australian interview where DOOM stated, “We’re working on some duets, some duet songs and shit. Just like preliminary shit but we’ll probably end up doing a whole record together.” As far as I know, this is the first mention DOOM and Yorke collaborating together other than Thom’s remix of DOOM’s track “Gazillion Ear”, which we discussed before here.

Additionally, there was mention of another DOOM project in the works with William Street (the people who do Adult Swim), which is exciting and sure to be hilarious; but honestly, I don’t want to be teased with anything new DOOM related until I am physically listening to the excruciatingly anticipated new Madvillain record (which we discussed before here) that should be released this year after getting continually pushed back for the last few years.

And lastly in case you didn’t know, Radiohead somewhat spontaneously released a record titled “King of Limbs” earlier this year without much publicity. The album isn’t single heavy, but it’s still good and worth your ear’s hard earned hours if you haven’t heard it yet.

Flying Lotus readies Cosmogramma

Los Angeles’ woozy beat maker supreme Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus is readying his third full length album, Cosmogramma (see album art above) which will be released on May 4, 2010 on Warp Records (pushed back from an originally fitting planned 4/20/10 release date).

In a fairly recent interview with Pitchfork, FlyLo explained in his own words that, “Cosmogramma is basically the studies that map out the universe and the relations of heaven and hell” and that he was turned on to the word when he heard it used in one of his aunt’s (Alice Coltrane) discourses. FlyLo has also gone on to say that, “I know without a doubt that this album (Cosmogramma) IS my best creative work thus far”. And if that’s not enough to get you excited, the 17 tracked album (check out the tracklist below) also features a guest appearance by none other than Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

So, while we are all salivating to hear some of these new tunes (especially the Yorke collab), you can pacify yourself by checking out some new unreleased non-Cosmogramma tunes on Flying Lotus’ myspace.

In addition, Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder has released “A Decade of Flying Lotus” mixed by The Gaslamp Killer, which includes a bunch of unreleased tracks spanning FlyLo’s ten years of making beats and heads knock. It’s a quality mix that is definitely worth your ear’s time and it’s FREE! So go and get your download on already.

Upcoming: New DOOM EP and Madvillain LP

Our favorite multi-aliased, comic-based, masked, villainous MC known as DOOM (…remember all caps when you spell the man name) has prepared a new EP (see album art above) centered around the Gazillion Ear track off DOOM’s recent record Born Like This. The Gazillion Ear EP features remixes (headlined by Thom Yorke of Radiohead and David Sitek of TV on the Radio), instrumental tracks, an a capella, and a few non Gazillion Ear b-sides, all to be released on December 8 via Lex Records. Check out the tracklist and a stream of the Thom Yorke Gazilion Ear remix below.

In other news, DOOM has been busy at work with fellow blunted super producer Madlib on the sequel to their 2004 masterpiece Madvillain – Madvillainy. Although there is still no official title or release date to the new Madvillain LP, you can be sure that it will be released on Stones Throw Records (hopefully in early 2010). J Rocc (of the Stones Throw crew) recently played a few snippets of songs from the upcoming Madvillain album on the Fat Beats radio show (on Eastvillageradio.com) and as expected, they sound quite promising. Check out the a stream of JRocc’s Madvillain previews on the radio show below (via youtube). If you’re still wanting more, there was also a good article recently by the New Yorker on DOOM (with some details on the new Madvillain album), which can be partially read via Stones Throw.

Thom Yorke forms Live Band w/Flea from RHCP!

Wow, surprising news today involving two of the biggest bands in popular music.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has put together a quasi super group (as shown in the picture above) to play his solo songs live (i.e., The Eraser and newer stuff) enlisting the help of Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Flea on bass, producer Nigel Godrich (who most recently has produced albums for Radiohead, Beck, and Air), R.E.M./Beck drummer Joey Waronker, percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Mauro Refosco, and of course, himself.

As of yet, only two shows have been confirmed and both are in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theater on Sunday Oct. 4th and Monday Oct. 5th. Tickets will cost you a pretty penny ($47 pre-ticketmaster fees) but this is sure to be a unique show with a lot of talent. Although, as Thom stated in his Dead Air Space announcement post (there are links to the ticketmaster listings for these shows on his post as well), “the set will not be very long cuz ..well …we haven’t got that much material yet!”

Note: After checking ticketmaster, it appears that both shows have already sold out (and it hasn’t even been 90 minutes since they became available). Time to either make nice with your hip friend who is extremely on top of his/her shit or get your scalping/craigslisting on. I guess $47 wasn’t that expensive after all.
