SebastiAn Live in SF, CA (09/11/11)

French electro artist SebastiAn recently came to San Francisco for a “live” show (at the Mezzanine on 09/19/11) and although the music was really enjoyable at the time, the performance ended up ultimately being a bit disappointing after later finding out that he was playing a premixed set without any kind of midi controller. However, if that’s not something that bothers you, then I would say he’s still worth seeing.

Ed Banger’s SebastiAn aka Sebastian Akchoté spent the duration of his 1hr+ set smoking cigarettes, drinking, looking at his computer, and putting one fist or two fists up every now and then. He was backed by a couple “S” lights, some random political themed visuals behind him, and an occasional barrage of flashing lights. Now as I mentioned before, the music sounded good and I heard some songs I didn’t recognize which is always exciting.

All in all it was still a fun time; but when you pay $25 for a ticket to see an artist play “live” (as it was billed) only to later find out that the guy is just smoking cigarettes along to his premixed set, it is kind of disappointing. This fact was validated by a DJ friend of mine who opened for SebastiAn that night.

Regardless, the videos below are worth watching because the sounds and video are pretty good (my new droid bionic phones takes 1080p videos apparently woo), and after all it’s all free so you should check out the videos below (without paying and feeling cheated of a real performance). Enjoy!

  1. Hey um just so you know (for future reference), there is a difference between a LIVE show and a DJ set. The difference being, a DJ set is a someone cue-ing songs and mixing/ using effects on the spot. A live show is ALWAYS a prerecorded set. EVERY Dj/producer plays a premixed set when playing live, usually with programs like Ableton live. The reason this is done is so that they can sync the visuals and lights with the music to perfection. SebastiAn is on his LIVE tour, not a dj tour (hence SebastiAn LIVE). I was part of the staff that day and I was able to see clearly behind his podium, and I can in fact confirm that he was NOT using itunes but in fact Ableton live. I don’t know what “dJ” friend gave you that info but they are wrong (and possibly jealous). The first two acts Nitppl and Realboy were DJsets, the third dj , NIsus may have been a live show (not really sure, wasn’t paying much attention to him, he was putting me and several of the crowd to sleep). I thought SebastiAn’s show was brilliant. The idea of giving an actual narrative story to an electronic dance show is mind blowing! So in reality you really have nothing to complain about, that night was fucking amazing!

  2. How can you possibly moan about paying $25 to see SebastiAn, that’s what, like £17 in our money. Bargain i’d say! I went to see Justice last month ‘live’, and couldn’t give a flying fuck as to whether it was pre-recorded, had a quality time, Justice rocked it!
SebastiAn is quality! Always gets the crowd going. I’d pay double that to be able to see him, unfortunately this tour ain’t coming anywhere near me 😦
